Congressman Paul Mitchell of Michigan visited PTI at their facility on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. PTI gave an overview of their manufacturing operation and introduced Congressman Mitchell to their workforce development program. In the fall of 2014, PTI launched the PTI Technical Academy as a pathway to introduce the fundamentals of the manufacturing industry to high school students’ grades 10 through 12. This 9-week course gives hands-on experience to students who may wish to pursue a technical career path after graduation. Since the academy opened, PTI has hired 9 of the students from the program for after school positions and offered a few full-time employment when they graduated from high school.
Mark Rathbone, the CEO, expressed his concerns about the shortage of skilled workers, and the need for schools and colleges to bring skilled trades back to their curriculum to replace an aging workforce. Congressman Mitchell is familiar with the concerns facing manufacturing, and as part of the education and workforce committee in Washington, he will be working on furthering policies to strengthen the workforce. While touring PTI, Congressman Mitchell was shown some of the latest technology used in the facility and the vast opportunities available to people in this industry.
